NFWL International Programs

NFWL Bahrain Trip, August 1st-6th 2004

Purpose:

In the present state of current affairs, we feel it is important for women legislators in the U.S. to reach out to the Middle East. Not only is the Kingdom of Bahrain a longtime friend of the United States, it has also made remarkable democratic strides in the last five years. We hope to strengthen this relationship, especially in terms of economic and democratic cooperation.

Attendees:

A geographically diverse team of several local, state, and federal women legislators who have expressed interest and expertise in International Relations. ** In order to report back to other legislators about their trip to Bahrain, these women must also attend NFWL's Annual Conference this November 18-22 at the Ritz Carlton in Sarasota, Florida.**

Itinerary:

  • Briefings by U.S. Trade Representative prior to departure on our economic relationship with Bahrain.
  • Five day trip, including travel, to Bahrain. Including scheduled meetings with King and Queen, Parliament, Chamber of Commerce, Supreme Council for Women, and other venerable institutions.
  • Upon return, earned media opportunities, including outreach to local, national, and international media describing your experience and impressions of your trip.
  • A report about our trip to Bahrain to our International Policy Committee at NFWL's 2004 Annual Conference.
  • Planning begins for our next trip to Bahrain, where we plan to lead a political leadership conference.
