NFWL, Office Depot Partner to Create Valentine's for Veterans Program
February 5, 2004
WASHINGTON-February 5, 2004 - The National Foundation For Women Legislators, Inc., (NFWL) today announced an agreement with Office Depot, Inc. (NYSE:ODP) in which the global office supply company will support the soon-to-be annual "Valentines For Veterans" program.
Beginning today and continuing through February 12, women elected officials who are currently serving as NFWL "Heart to Heart" Veterans Affairs Team Leaders will team with Office Depot employees to visit underprivileged elementary school classrooms across the country. As part of the program, more than 1,500 children will make Valentine's Day cards to send to U.S. troops in the Middle East and to veterans in local Veterans Affairs facilities.
"Encouraging children to see the world beyond their classroom, to learn about the importance of service and to recognize our nation's veterans is just so incredible," said Robin Read, NFWL President and CEO. "We are truly thankful to Office Depot for helping make thousands of veterans feel appreciated."
Under the agreement with NFWL, Office Depot will donate 50 $100 money cards for the purchase of art supplies for the card-making project as well as backpacks for each child.
"A very significant portion of Office Depot's philanthropic activities is focused on children," noted Mary Wong, Director of Community Relations for Office Depot. "Because of this, it gives us a special satisfaction to participate in a program that helps children honor our troops – both past and present – in a most meaningful way."
To support this initiative, a national press conference will be held on Tuesday, February 24 at 10:00 a.m. on Capitol Hill. Children from area schools will be joined by:
• The U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Anthony J. Principi
• Elected officials from every state and territory
• Officials from The Library of Congress
• Disabled American Veterans
• Members of Congress
• Office Depot executives
Additionally, on the afternoon of Tuesday, February 24, regional press conferences will take place in each state and territory hosted by a woman elected official who is serving as the NFWL "Heart to Heart" Veterans Team Leader. Office Depot representatives and children from local schools will also participate.
Media representatives are welcome to attend and should contact NFWL or Office Depot to find out the date, location and time for the scheduled event in their area.
