A nationwide organization that works to provide more opportunities for female lawmakers is getting some Brooklyn-style input. Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis has been named by the National Foundation for Women Legislators to serve as its New York state director.

Founded in 1938, the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) works with female lawmakers across the country at the local, county and state government levels. The nonprofit organization holds seminars and forums to encourage women who hold elective office to seek leadership roles within their legislative bodies and to work across the aisle on bipartisan solutions to issues.

The NFWL offers its members governance strategies through conferences, state outreach, educational materials, professional and personal relationships and networking.

As the New York state director, Malliotakis (R-C-Bay Ridge-Staten Island) will serve as a point of contact for elected women in New York and will be tasked with making sure that female elected officials are informed about the opportunities and resources that the NFWL offers.

Malliotakis’ tenure begins immediately. She will hold the director’s office through the end of 2017.

NFWL Chairperson Minnesota state Sen. Carrie Ruud said Malliotakis will play a key role as the foundation seeks to increase its ranks of active members. The organization is headquartered in Washington, D.C.

Since 1971, the number of women serving in state legislatures in the U.S. has more than quintupled, according to the NFWL.

“We are so proud Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis has accepted a leadership position in our foundation. NFWL’s theme for 2017 is leadership, and Nicole exemplifies this theme,” Ruud said in a statement.

“I want to thank NFWL for selecting me to coordinate their efforts in the state of New York. I am honored to serve my colleagues as state director and will do my best to grow this remarkable organization that has empowered many women to step in to elected positions across the country. I look forward to helping one of our nation’s oldest nonpartisan organization and identifying and addressing the needs of elected women at all levels of government,” Malliotakis said.
