We are thrilled to welcome Hawaii Senator Donna Mercado Kim as the Chair of our Board for 2020. She has a very keen mind, and is an incredible leader ready to help us grow and expand throughout the year.
– Jody Thomas, NFWL Executive Director.

January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month and we are pleased to continue our partnership with Shared Hope International, an organization known for their worldwide effort to eradicate sex trafficking. They have numerous resources to prevent, restore and bring justice to help end sex trafficking.
Do you know the potential warning signs of child sex trafficking? Be sure to check out their resources and stay informed so you can get involved.

At our 2019 Annual Conference NFWL participants gathered to talk about human trafficking, sharing the legislation they have worked on in their states. The group then headed outside to create a Red Sand Installation. This initiative is symbolic, with the grains of sand representing those individuals who fall through the cracks—whether the cracks of our social, economic, and political systems or those of our personal consciousness.

Order more sand to replicate the event in your state here, and share your legislation on human trafficking issues here, or reach out to brenna@womenlegislators.org to contribute an article on the topic.

NFWL wants to provide you with easy access to information on issues. Grab ‘n Go programming is brought to you by organizations who are recognized as best-in-class in their category, bringing resources, programs, and presentation materials right to your fingertips. From NFWL toolkits to conference presentations, to facts on women in elected office, plus great resources from Shared Hope International about Human Trafficking. NFWL’s Grab n’ Go has it all for you at the click of a button.

Pew Charitable Trusts has spent over 70 years conducting nonpartisan research to help solve today’s challenges. They are known for using an analytical approach to improve public policy and practices, and their focus on serving the public is what they are known for. We all know the start of the new year brings new goals, including financial ones. Pew discusses in this article about one financial goal people may have-paying off student loans. They explain the challenges in the repayment system, and how borrowers need flexibility.

“To help fill this information gap and better understand where public policy can have the greatest impact, The Pew Charitable Trusts commissioned the Trellis Company, a Texas-based organization that acts as a guarantor for the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) program, to conduct an analysis of almost 400,000 borrowers in that state (referred to as “Texas borrowers” throughout the paper) during the five-year period beginning when their loans entered repayment anytime between October 2007 and September 2011.”
