Join NFWL’s State Directors and Policy Committee on March 15th at 2:30 ET for a joint discussion on what policy topics you want to learn about this year. The call will allow you the opportunity to let us know:

  • What kind of experts would you like to speak on these issues?
  • What questions do you have for the speakers?
  • Have you worked on this issue, and if so, would you be interested in helping shape the session further?
  • Are there any elected women in your state who are thought leaders we should engage with?

At the end of 2018, almost 4.4 million Americans—or 1 in 58 adults—were on probation or parole in the U.S., compared with slightly more than 2.2 million in jails and state and federal prisons. To address the unique challenges of supervision systems, The Pew Charitable Trusts set out to help policymakers and other stakeholders by reviewing state statutes affecting probation systems in all 50 states to gauge legislative adoption of five key community supervision policies affecting felony probation. The review revealed substantial opportunity for improvements, with only 6 states having relatively strong statutes that generally align with what research says can make probation effective.
